Pop Culture Moments of 2020

During 2020, many events made significant changes in our lives, like the unprecedented pandemic that led to everyone social distancing and putting society on lockdown. Nonetheless, pop culture still had its uplifting moments throughout 2020. From binge-watching shows to constantly scrolling through TikTok, many of us relied on pop culture, entertainment, and other forms of media. Here are some notable moments that happened in 2020.



Billie Eilish at the Grammys

During the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2020, Billie Eilish made a significant impact on musical history. She swept a total of five awards that year, which include Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Best New Artist, and Song of the Year. Besides the fact that she is the second person in history to win awards from these four categories, she is also the first woman to do so. Out of every other artist, Billie Eilish became the youngest person to win the Album of the Year award.



Meghan Markle and Prince Harry

One of the most noteworthy moments of 2020 was Prince Harry and Meghan Markle shocking the world, especially the U,K., by announcing that they will be stepping down as primary members of the royal family. Their decision was publicly released amid widespread speculation and criticism from the media. Although they are both still considered the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, they are no longer referred to as His and Her Royal Highness.



Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston

Back in January 2020, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston reunited, which completely shocked the media and fans worldwide. When Jennifer Aniston won a SAG Award for the drama series “The Morning Show”, Brad Pitt was backstage watching her speech. They reunited backstage at the SAG Awards; fortunately, the moment was captured on camera. Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were married for five years before getting divorced in 2005. However, this definitely isn’t the first time that the both of them have reunited since their divorce; they have been friends for a few years. In fact, Brad was even invited to Jennifer’s 50th birthday party and a Christmas party at her home in December 2019.



Tiger King

The docuseries Tiger King that was released on Netflix became something that many people obsessed over. It was released at the beginning of quarantine and was one of the most talked-about shows. Within the first month of its release, this show was sampled by 64 million households globally.


Parasite winning an Oscar

At the Oscars in February of 2020, Parasite, a South Korean film, made history as the first non-English language film to ever win the Best Picture award. 



Megan Thee Stallion

Following the release of Megan Thee Stallion’s Hot Girl Summer song in the summer of 2019, she rose to even more fame in 2020. One of her most notable releases in 2020 includes a collaboration with Beyoncé, Savage (Remix), which earned three Grammy nominations. In addition, she also released her debut album Good News.



Taylor Swift: Folklore and Evermore

Unexpectedly, Taylor Swift released two albums, Folklore and Evermore, in 2020, surprising fans all over the world. Her Folklore album was recorded and created during the coronavirus pandemic, and this album ended up becoming the best-selling album of 2020. Additionally, it broke the record for the most first-day album streams by a female artist on Spotify.

TikTok’s popularity

Even though TikTok has existed since 2017, the app’s popularity spiked in 2020, especially during the pandemic By April, this app gained about two billion downloads on mobile devices- a record-breaking number.

In summary, 2020 was a year for the books in terms of pop culture.
