Super Straightness

As per the Urban Dictionary, Super straightness is defined as “being attracted to an opposite gender, who is born the same gender as they refer to”. The term originated in March of 2021 over the popular platform TikTok and is said to have been first coined by TikTok user ‘kyleroyce’. In his video, he says that “You can’t say I’m trans-phobic now, that’s just my sexuality y’know?” The newly coined term spread over social media like wildfire and attracted divided opinions from users. Let’s delve into what exactly the founder has to say, the opinion of the perpetrators, and the widespread backlash.

The term spread over to far-right users on the 4chan website and members of the LGBTQ+ community on Twitter. What ensued was a rigorous online war. People adhering to the new sexuality vehemently defended their stance whereas transgenders maintained their opinion. On one side we have the people stating that the harsh backlash towards the super-straight “sexuality” is oppressive. They explain it as a simple preference and assert that they have their right to choose. On the other, critics of the movement call it transphobia. Several allegations were made as to how no one is forcing hetero-cis people to date trans-people. AbbyInni on Twitter explains this as, "you see trans women less as women and trans men less as men than cis people and that's transphobic." Slanderers of the super-straight movement explained that the new sexuality directly harms transgender people. This also directly demeans all that they stand for and adds to their gender dysmorphia. Another reason for the outrage against the term was due to the fact that it is said to be linked back to neo-nazi trolls on 4chan. However, this is undetermined and the term can actually be sourced back to TikTok. As of now, the fire has mostly died down and people’s stance has solidified.

As for members of Generation Z, there was a bitter reaction. The term was supposedly coined by a Genz-er and most of the discourse was undertaken by the same. As per a Gallup survey done in 2021, 1 in 6 Gen Z members identifies as members of the LGBTQ+ community. As of now, generation Z stands as the most sexually-diverse generation! Perhaps this explains why the backlash was so strong. This resentment was so severe that the user ‘kyleroyce’ is said to have received death threats and fear for the safety of his family.

“Super-straight” people also made videos and comments about “coming out” and “super-straight phobia”. Valid comments were made saying that this isn’t actually a logical idealogy but rather just a mockery of queer people. No one is forcing others to date trans-people but starting a movement specifically against them is degrading and insulting. In the end, this seems to be another attack on the members of the LGBTQ community. The debate caused online stems from the disrespect to the transgender community even though super-straight members claim that it’s just a preference.
