Prioritizing the Unimportant

Becoming an Apathetic Student

Man once thought they could touch the stars, to reach past the horizon, but over the years, newer generations have caused the will for greatness to halt. Apathetic students have changed their visions for the future. These students have become mediocre compared to their ancestors by making learning a nonessential priority. By shifting their priorities, students’ drive to achieve something for themselves has become nonexistent; their lack of a clear vision will cause average results. Poor grades always come back to haunt the student most of the time, but when a student becomes apathetic, why would they be worried about a couple of failing assignments? Grades have no place in their life when a student’s priorities have become useless pastimes, such as spending mindless hours playing video games. “What good would school do for me?” students would wonder. That person would think they could become a successful gamer and make millions until they reach the hard reality that if they continue down that path, the ultimate result is them still playing video games at 40 years old in their parent’s basement. Though grades are not the greatest measure of success, they are essential in allowing a student to explore their options and receive guidance.

Zero Attention = No Commitment

When a person explains they are in an activity for the long run, they would justify their choices by explaining the fruits of their dedication would be worthwhile. School should be the same, being in it for the long run will only result in better opportunities for the future. Apathetic students like to think otherwise, lacking commitment toward school. A student would not choose such a boring topic as school when they would rather spend hours staring at social media. According to the article, “Positive & Negative Effect Of Social Media On Education” shows students lacking commitment is often due to the inability to concentrate because of their apathy. “These days students tend to lose their concentrate from studying and instead enjoy browsing on social media.” When a student loses sight of what is important and decides to spend that time aimlessly, they do not lose anything because the subject had never been important to them.

Many teens are addicted to their phones, distracting them from school.

Dangers of Addiction

Priorities in a student's life other than school are becoming more and more common. A shift in goals and objectives may often lead down to some haunting addictions. Gaming, tiktoking, and drug dealing have become the priority shift that in the end only leads to a road of addiction. Becoming addicted to an unhealthy priority only damages oneself in the long run. Their lifestyle would now revolve around that addiction when instead, they could have been studying and waiting for the right moment to branch out towards hobbies. Now the pastime had become the primary focus of their life. Shifting priorities and moving toward addiction can become serious in determining the level of success of a student. Becoming addicted to a pastime such as social media can also lead to actual health problems. According to the previous article, it also states, “Too much use of social media can have adverse effects on students’ minds, and they may also be exposed to bad posture, eye strain, and physical and mental stress.” Not only can putting effort into an unhelpful event lead to addiction but can also affect their actual health.

In Conclusion

Apathy has a tremendous impact on a student’s work ethic throughout their life. Becoming neglectful of school work can only lead to a series of bad habits down the road. When a student shifts priorities to dangerous addictive things, one gets mediocre grades, has no commitment to hobbies, and ends up developing addictions. Instead of students utilizing their opportunities during and taking advantage of the highest point available for optimal learning, they are throwing it all away like nothing onto a burning trash can.
